About AVIF

AVIF stores pictures with AV1, the video codec of the Alliance for Open Media, whose members include Google, Apple, Microsoft and Netflix. Version 1.0 came out in 2019.

An AVIF is often half the size of a JPEG that looks the same. It handles 10 and 12 bit color, HDR and transparency, which is why more sites and phones use it every year.

Current versions of every major browser show AVIF, Edge since version 121. Filepeek uses your browser's own decoder and adds the details, the zoom and Save as PNG or JPEG.

Questions

Why won't AVIF open on my computer?

Many photo apps can't read AVIF yet. Your browser can, so open it here and save it as PNG or JPEG for everything else.

What is an AVIFS file?

An AVIF image sequence, several frames in one file. Filepeek shows the first one.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes it on your device, and it's never sent to a server.

Can I convert it to PNG or JPEG?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as PNG or Save as JPEG.
