About JPEG XL

JPEG XL became an ISO standard in 2022. It's made for photos and graphics alike: lossy or lossless, HDR and wide color, transparency and animation, from tiny icons to huge images.

It can also repack an existing JPEG about 20% smaller with no loss at all, and turn it back into the exact same JPEG later.

Safari shows JPEG XL since version 17. Chrome turned it on in version 155 and Firefox in version 158, both in October 2026. For Edge and older versions, Filepeek decodes it itself, so it opens anywhere.

Questions

Why won't my browser open JXL files?

Browsers have only started showing JPEG XL recently: Safari in version 17, Chrome in 155 and Firefox in 158. Filepeek decodes it inside the page, so other browsers and older versions open it here too.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The decoder runs in your browser. The file is never sent to a server.

Does it play animated JXL?

Not yet. Filepeek shows the first frame.

Can I turn it into a PNG or JPEG?

Yes. Open it, choose Export, then Save as PNG or Save as JPEG.
