About JPG

JPG, also written JPEG, has been the standard format for photos since 1992. Cameras, phones and the web all use it. It keeps files small with lossy compression, which drops detail the eye barely notices.

Every browser can show a JPG, but not everything inside it. Filepeek opens it at actual size, lets you zoom in to the pixel and shows its size, its color profile and its EXIF, the notes a camera leaves about how and where a photo was taken.

JPG and JPEG are the same format. The shorter .jpg comes from old versions of Windows, which only allowed three letter extensions.

Questions

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. They are the same format. Old versions of Windows only allowed three letter extensions, so .jpeg became .jpg.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo opens inside your browser and is never sent to a server.

How do I see where a photo was taken?

Open it, then press Show EXIF. If the camera saved a location, it's listed with a link to the map.

Can I save it as PNG?

Yes. Choose Export, then Save as PNG. You get the full size image as a PNG.
