About JFIF

JFIF is the layout most JPEG files have used since 1992. The image data in a .jfif file is exactly the same as in a .jpg. Only the extension differs.

The extension shows up when Windows or a browser saves a picture from the web as .jfif instead of .jpg. A setting in Windows, often changed by other apps, decides which one you get. Some apps then refuse to open the file, even though it's an ordinary photo.

Filepeek doesn't go by the extension. It opens the file as the JPEG it is, at actual size, with its size, its color profile and any EXIF it carries.

Questions

Is JFIF the same as JPG?

Yes. A .jfif file holds a JPEG image. Renaming it to .jpg changes nothing inside, and then every app opens it.

Why are my downloads saved as JFIF?

A setting in Windows links JPEG images to the .jfif extension on some computers, so browsers use it when you save one. The image itself is a normal JPEG.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It opens inside your browser and never reaches a server.

Can I turn it into a JPG?

Yes. Open it, choose Export, then Save as JPEG. You get a regular .jpg file. Save as PNG works too.
