About JPEG XR

JPEG XR started at Microsoft as HD Photo in 2006 and became a JPEG standard in 2009. It stores high dynamic range and wide color with lossy or lossless compression, and it decodes quickly.

Today you mostly meet it as HDR screenshots. The Xbox Game Bar on Windows saves them as .jxr, and so do Xbox consoles. Older files from Windows Photo Gallery use the .wdp and .hdp extensions.

Internet Explorer and the first Edge could show it, but no current browser can. Filepeek decodes it itself and fits its HDR range into colors any screen can show, so you can see the shot and save it as PNG or JPEG.

Questions

How do I open a JXR screenshot?

Drop it on this page or press Peek a JPEG XR. Filepeek shows the HDR shot right away, and Export saves it as a PNG or JPEG you can share.

Why does it look calmer than on my HDR screen?

Filepeek fits the HDR range into normal colors so every screen can show it, which tones down the brightest highlights.

What are .wdp and .hdp files?

The older names of the same format, from when Microsoft called it Windows Media Photo and HD Photo. They open here too.

Is my screenshot uploaded?

No. It's decoded inside your browser and never leaves your device.
