About HEIF

HEIF is the file format MPEG finished in 2015 for storing images with modern video codecs. HEIC is a HEIF with HEVC inside, which is what iPhones save, and many files named .heif hold the same thing.

Cameras from Canon, Fujifilm and Sony can save HEIF photos with the .hif extension, in 10 bit color that keeps more shades than an 8 bit JPEG. Few apps open them, and most browsers can't.

Filepeek decodes HEIF with HEVC inside on its own, in your browser, and shows its bit depth, color profile and EXIF. A HEIF with AV1 inside is an AVIF, which your browser opens by itself.
