About NEF
NEF is the raw format of Nikon's digital SLRs and Z mirrorless cameras. Most Coolpix compacts that shoot raw use a close relative, NRW, which arrived with the Coolpix P6000 in 2008.
A NEF is built on TIFF and stores 12 or 14 bits per pixel, either uncompressed, with lossless compression, or with lossy compression for smaller files.
No browser shows NEF by itself. Filepeek develops it with LibRaw, the open source raw decoder, using the camera's white balance. Show EXIF lists the camera, the lens, the settings and, when it was recorded, the location.

How do I open a NEF without Nikon's software?
Drop it on this page or press Peek a NEF. Filepeek develops it in your browser, so you don't need NX Studio or Lightroom, and Export saves it as a JPEG or PNG.
Why does it look flatter than on my camera?
Your camera applies its Picture Control, with extra contrast, color and sharpening, to the photos it shows and saves as JPEG. Filepeek develops the raw data neutrally, with the camera's white balance, so the photo can look flatter here.
What is an NRW file?
The raw format of most Nikon Coolpix compacts that shoot raw, from the P6000 on. It's a close relative of NEF, and Filepeek opens it the same way.
